Golf cart ordinance in Birch Bay is made permanent

On October 22, 2019 the Whatcom County Council voted 7-0 to make the Birch Bay golf cart ordinance permanent. Previously it had been legal to use a golf cart in Birch Bay but the county had made a trial period to see if the new law would have any unwanted effects.

There were no major problems reported by residents or police during the trial period and the feedback from residents, visitors, and local Birch Bay businesses was very positive.

The ordinance requires users to follow specific rules and also the rules that fall under the state requirements for golf cart zones. Golf carts will need to be equipped with mirrors (drivers side, passenger side, and rear view), seat belts, and reflectors. All drivers must be 16 years or older and have completed a drivers education course or have a license. Insurance in Washington is not required however it is strongly suggested that users carry insurance for their carts.
